@tanguatlay,
They all state that my computer is not functioning. None of them state that my computer needs to be repaired.

Thanks, InfraBlue.

Then, how do you describe the fact that my computer needs repairing?

@tanguatlay,
Well, I would guess that you are not qualified to make that judgment. It is somewhat unusual for a computer to actually need to be repaired. Most of the time the operator expects something the computer can't do, or there has been some change in software, or an update has not been installed. Occasionally something fails because a plug has been disconnected. The operator usually has no clue about which of these might be the cause of a failure. Stick to describing what the machine does and what you wanted it to do.

@Ponderer,
Thanks to all of you.

What about a car? Which adjective describes a car whuch needs repair? My car is broken. If not, what is the correct adjective?

@tanguatlay,
Broken usually means that something needs repairing.

That is the case with a broken computer. It would also be the case with a car, but most cars break when they're out on the road, so we would normally say my car has broken down.

Thanks, izzythepush.

Can I also say the following?

My car is out of order.
My car is not working.

I disagree. There is a difference between saying..

- My computer is broken.
- My computer needs to be fixed.

If my computer is broken, I might fix it. I might throw it away and get a new one. I might just live with it.

If I say my computer needs to be fixed, I am specifying clearly what response I am considering to the state of my computer.

@maxdancona,
If it's broken it needs fixing, regardless of whether or not you have to do it yourself, or upgrade.

Your specialism is science not language.

@tanguatlay,
You could say that but it's not usual, the most common term is to say it's broken down.

@izzythepush,
If I am going to throw it out because it is broken, why does it "need fixing"?

@maxdancona,
If you're throwing it out it can't be used, but if you did want to use it you would have to repair it.

The OP is asking about the computer, not what you intend to do with it.

You're just muddying the waters.

No point fixing it. It was too old.
