I adore Spike Milligan...and Michael Bentine, Harry Seacombe but perhaps not so much Peter Sellers.

Spike Milligan was a genius, an eccentric comic treasure, a gifted writer and a passionate animal rights advocate.

Like all exceptionally gifted people, he had fantastic highs and endured hellish lows...let's talk more...

I have some work to do, but I'll be back on later!

Spike Milligan was my hero. In my estimation, he was the forefather of worldwide alternative comedy. What a brain that man had.

I think all of the goons were brilliant, just the right mix of people. Peter Sellers was a bit of a 60's poser in his private life, but he was incredibly funny when "performing".

He once rang Spike's doorbell (in London) at 2am, and when Spike answered, Peter asked him if he would look after his Cow (or was it a horse, either way its funny) and then just walked off.
Spike was left with the animal.

A favourite bit of the goons......
Seagoon (on an archaeological dig) "Good god, this Dinosaurs over a million years old! "
(Chorus in background) "Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday ....."

A good Spike website....

The Spike Milligan Tribute Site
Hi

I run the Spike Milligan Tribute Site, so I thought I would let you know, I've just launched the Spike Milligan Appreciation Society. The website for SMAS is www.smas.me.uk

I look forward to seeing you there.

Great post- I too am a Spike fan.

I recently brought The Essential Spike Milligan, which was published following his death and has a Foreword by Eddie Izzard.

I read out 'Silly Old Baboon' to my brother's kids, who fell about
on the floor laughing - it was amazing. They didn't want to go back to the tv,
no - they wanted more Spike.

My favourite Spike poem is Soldier Freddy.
I think it is genius.

Peace,
E

Sounds like it should be - but I looked it up and think we may have found Spike Milligan's American counterpart.

Ogden Nash (1902 - 1971)

Last night I saw upon the stair
a little man who was not there
he wasn't there again tonight
gee whiz I wish he'd go away......
www.americanpoems.com/poets/nash

(your version's much better B)

On the site about Nash it says: He was prolific enough that he published a collection of his poetry, Hard Lines, in 1931. Hard Lines sold out seven printings in its first year and catapulted Nash into his role as the master of light verse.

In an environment in which people cared little about poetry, Nash managed to be one of the most popular and most quoted poets of his time, coining such phrases as "candy is dandy but liquor is quicker."

Photograph of Nash on the site.

Thanks for that, benjamino.

Peace,
E
