500 Dogs to Die! (posted 5/1/05)

The greyhound track in Plainfield, CT voted on April 26th that they would discontinue greyhound racing. Unfortunately - and heartbreakingly - they've also decided that rescuers have only two weeks to get the dogs out, and any dogs remaining at the track on May 14th will be euthanized. This is a monumental task because there are at least 500 dogs currently at the track. These are all young, healthy dogs, 2-4 years of age, who would make great family pets.

If anyone in the area knows anyone who can adopt/foster a greyhound, please have them look into this ASAP...... thanks.

Five hundred?! Geeze Luize! Can animal shelters take over a few at a time? What, how? What can I do, short of taking a few dogs, which I really cannot right now? Is it in the papers? Publicized enough?

Greyhound Friends: Dedicated to the rescue, appreciation, and care of the greyhound dog.

Quote:

We received word on April 27 that the greyhound track at Plainfield, CT. will be closing down as of May 15- good news and bad. Certainly we are happy to have one less track, especially one that has produced more than its share of broken legs. The bad news: there are 1200 greyhounds at Plainfield that will need safe places to go.

While Greyhound Friends is hopeful that all adoption groups will step forward and help, we know that a large part of the burden will fall on us since we have been one of the primary “safe havens” for Plainfield greyhounds over the last several years. We need to prepare now to take in more dogs than we normally do and make sure they have temporary places to go. Hay Hill kennels can accommodate only so many, especially now as vacation season approaches. In addition to housing dogs until they can be placed into permanent homes, we need to expand our available discounted veterinary services so the dogs can be prepared for adoption as quickly as possible.

Here’s what we need you to do:

*Volunteer to foster at least one dog, hopefully short-term, until we can get the vet work done and place the dog in an appropriate home.

*Help with transportation from the track to New Jersey as we have space available for dogs.

*If you’re unable to do any of the above, dig down and make an extra donation to help with the increased kenneling and veterinary fees we will be facing to accommodate the extra dogs. Any amount will be appreciated.

*If you have been considering adopting a second, third... greyhound, now may be the perfect time to do so.

*If you know of any venues that might be a good place to promote greyhound adoption, please let me know and we will see if we can do a Meet and Greet at the event. Now that Spring is here, there are a lot of street fairs, craft shows,.... all of which are good ways to promote the education about and the adoption of our greyhounds.

All of us who love greyhounds will have to pitch in and help until this crisis is over and all the dogs are in safe places.

If you can help with any of these things please call Barbara at _________[phone number available at link provided above].

Greyhound rescues can be great pets - need surprisingly little exercise outside of one good chance to sprint a day. A former colleague adopted one, and then a second. Nice big lap dogs - biggest problem was that they destroyed her kids' stuffed toys (that prey instinct is strong).

Most of the materials I've read about adopting greyhound dogs state that these dogs are not "cat-safe." I guess that can also be attributed to their instinct to chase prey.

<nodding>

They're definitely dogs for particular circumstances and experienced owners. But damn good dogs within those guidelines.
