I'm not too sure what you're asking. However, I think a teacher can't give a better gift than enthusiasm. It would inspire the beginning of a life long interest in and love for poetry.

To learn what kind of poetry? Classical poetry writing or modern?

I'm not an expert, and I'm still learning to write but this is my opinion.

Modern free form makes it easy for people to write what they consider poetry now a days. Now you have good free form poetry, and bad free form poetry. Those that are serious poetry students will try out the classical forms to improve their writing skills. I think that if your poor in english, and grammar you will have a harder time learning classical forms. This is why many people like to write in modern free form.
