Bee bloody, bold and resolute.

Interesting, isn't it, in these days of relativism that "Spelling Nazi" is a permitted term and "Illiterate" is both elitist and insulting?

Now that I think about it, intellectual dishonesty and posturing bother me more than an out-and-out, arrant illiterate.

In general, i think that online etiquette requires that one take no notice of spelling errors--however, it is bad form not to spell someone's name correcly, whether online or elsewhere. Furthermore, there is a point at which both spelling and expressional composition are so bad as to prevent the reader from understanding the author's meaning.

In another thread, someone had written "foder." I commented that i hadn't the least idea what that word was supposed to mean. Hours and hours later, i realized that the author meant "fodder." But as the use of the word fodder would not have been appopriate in that context, i did not immediately recognize the nature of the error. There are definitely times when spelling and grammatical and syntactical construction are so sufficiently poor as to make senseless what the author hopes to communicate.

Ya know, this particular silly rant comes up every once in a while, and I sorta get a chuckle and jaw grind all at once when it does. Why the hell do some folks have such difficulty separatin' the argument and/or its manner of presentation from the person of the presenter?

Now, I just plain don't have any typin' skills at all, and I make more than my share both of typos and real spellin' errors - 'specially if I'm in a hurry, or thumb-typin' on a handheld, or payin' more attention to somethin' else while typin'. Some screwups I catch and correct, some I miss, and some I just let go as not bein' worth the trouble of clickin' "Edit Post" - the "Ahhh ... the heck with it" factor. Careless, sloppy, and embarrassin', yeah - but indicative of anything else? Meanin'fully pertinent to the sense of the statement so flawed once it hits the screen? I think not.

<shakes head, shrugs>

Astoundin' what'll entertain some folks - and the length some folks'll go to entertain themselves. Sometimes humans are amazin' critters - able to do so much with so little. Rolling Eyes

You think your way, Big Bird, and i'll think mine. I do not take notice of spelling errors unless its my name, or the spelling and grammar are so bad that i cannot take the author's meaning. If that seems silly to you, then have your laugh and i'll ignore it.

Usually when an author has such bad grammar, spelling or paragraph construction that I can't read or understand what he/she is writing... I simply move on to a different post.

I agree with that JP, although the particular case i cited was one in which the author was specifically addressing me.

Setanta, so glad to find you active on A2K again. I've missed you.

BTW, you seem a tad grumpy, darlin. Do you by any chance currently have a hair over your can?

Aunt Bee, if you mean the Panzade incident, i've never really liked him, and although i've tried to be cordial, he seems to have a positive talent for writing stupid things directed at me, and there are times when i simply no longer wish to be cordial about it. Now i'll get chewed out when my sweetiepie reads that.

simplified spelling is all right, but, like chastity, you can carry it too far.
- The Alphabet and Simplified Spelling speech, 12/9/1907

Actually, spelling is my weakest area of the mechanics of writing; consequently, I am very careful to check it out for my own betterment.

How do you spell pugnacious, yawl?

Theodore Roosevelt attempted to impose simplified spelling on the Federal government, and failed miserably.

My spelling is far superior to anyone else's. I take no notice of your puny spelling mistakes.

On the other hand, I'm a big fan of irony.

Set, many folks have tried to impose things on the Federal government and failed miserably. I just wish the inverse were true.
