Varies.

It was once always considered to be very poor - especially compared with the USA, at least in the hospitality trade, but it is generally very good there, now.

Shops? I find it fine - but then, I do not buy lots of consumer items, and when I buy electrical stuff, I get it at a store where I get an extra year's warranty - and their service is always excellent.

Two examples of customer service which I just faced

1. At the post office - I had gone to give in my British passport application form. In one section, they had asked for the details of my parents, and their passport numbers, IF THEY HELD A BRITISH PASSPORT. Obviously I had left that section blank. The guy at the counter came back after a while and said that he cannot accept my application as I had left the passport number section blank. I told him that my parents do not have a british passport and hence I cannot fill it in. He said, no matter what passport they had, I had to fill in the section !! So I pointed him to the instructions (which were on that section itself) - and he goes - "U are taking a big chance with yr application being rejected, pls don't blame the post office for it." At that point I lost my cool and told him "Look mate, maybe yr English i smuch better than mine, but I have no problem in reading simple sentences. I will take the chance of getting my application rejected. U just tell me whether you are going to accept my form or not" !!!

2. I went to my friendly neighbourhood bookstore Books etc, to pick up some books. At the counter, while I was paying, I just got talking to the lady abt the horrible book I had picked up the other week and gave up reading it half way. We just got discussing what I did not like abt the book and she goes, you know if u disliked it, u can always return it back to us ? I told her that I did not have the receipt, and she said, anyone who hates the book with such a passion has to be a genuine guy and she returned the book, which was in my bag, without a receipt !! Bought a big smile to my face !! I could have kissed her for her helpfulness and politeness, but she was a woman Sad <Tee Hee>

I thought today that if i drag my notebook and all the books into my bed, it will be easier and pleasant to write my dissertation. i didn't think for long... fell asleep for 4 hours - but that's also because i have a cold. how CAN i work, as soon as i am behind a desk, it automatically sucks me into a2k. life....so tough.
