Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) Arsenal's Mesut Ozil has played very well so far this season.

2) Arsenal's Mesut Ozil has been playing very well so far this season.

If both are possible, do they mean the same thing?

If so, which would you use?

I would use one. If you want to use the structure of two, I would say "Arsenal's Mesut Ozil has been playing very well this season."
