@paok1970,
You say someone is coming over when they're coming to your house for a reason, dinner, coffee, political meeting whatever. It's used as a phrase, and trying to reduce the phrase to its constituent parts isn't going to help.

@izzythepush,
Do you say, "to come (over) for dinner" or "to come (over) to dinner"?

Thank you

@paok1970,
I would say for dinner, but you could say come over to watch the football.

@izzythepush,
Do you remember the 1967 movie entitled "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn? Was it an exception to the "rule"?

Again, many, many thanks for your kind help.

@paok1970,
I do, it's not incorrect, it's a question. Which I suppose is why it works.

I think the title sounds more dramatic because it's not used as much and that's why they chose it.

@izzythepush,
Does "it's not used as much" have the same meaning as "it's not used very much"?

Thank you.
