People familiar with the Dixie Cups' or the Shirelles' versions may not recognize this right away . . .

This was written and first recorded by the Carter Family in the 1930s . . .

@Setanta,
Was this version on the first Trio CD? I know I have it, but was it in the first or second collaboration?

I'm still having trouble transferring videos to A2K, but if you get a chance look up "The Rivingtons - The Bird's The Word - 1963 45rpm". this is the group that actually recorded "Bird is the word" before The Trashmen claimed they wrote it. It's important to remember that black artists didn't get a lot of play on the 'white' AM stations so many white artists stole the material and recorded it as their own. I think the 'Rivingtons' recorded the best version.

Just a little factoid that I happened upon in my idle hours.

@glitterbag,
This is what you type:

Code:

Of course, you copy the URL from the page where you found the video. It only works for youtube. However, I don't see what "The Bird is the Word" has to do with matrimony, or the failure thereof.

It doesn't have anything to do with matrimony, it's just the original version of the song and I thought of it when you mentioned the Carter family's 1930's version.
Just a mind blip.

Kiss and Say Goodbye
The Manhattans

This has got to be the saddest day of my life
I called you here today for a bit of bad news
I won't be able to see you any more
Because of my obligations
And the ties that you have
We've been meeting here every day
And since this is our last date together
I want to hold you just one more time
When you turn and walk away
Don't look back I want to remember you just like this
Let's just kiss
And say goodbye

I had to meet you here today
There's just so many things to say
Please don't stop me till I'm through
This is something I hate to do
We've been meeting here so long
I guess what we done was wrong
Please, darling, don't you cry
Let's just…
