Terminology for "transitional" indoor/outdoor spaces?

Hey, it's my first post! We were discussing and realized that we lack terminology for building features that are involved when you have spaces that are sort of outdoor/sort of indoor. Such as what you might see in tropical or hot climates, where you're both open to and protected from the elements. Loggias, porticoes and lanais for starters - how do you describe the details? For instance, say you have an "indoor" room except that it features BIG openings across the wall that allow wind to come through, what do you call those openings? They are clearly NOT "windows" because they're not intended to have glass -- and are intended to be always open to a certain amount of the elements. Or other features. What's a good source for those descriptions?

Hmm, it's not a window and there's no door, could it be an opening, an entrance, an entry : are we on the very threshold of the answer?

Chuckling...yet those are all serviceable words! (Nice architectural pun, too.) Let's keep looking.....Surely Hawaiians and other tropical islanders have a well-developed vocabulary for this sort of stuff.
