This one always makes me smile..it starts out so sad, and sincere, then there's this pause just before old Roy breaks into the punchline in the chorus.
I've made a small fortune and you squandered it all
You shamed me till I feel about one inch tall
But I thought I loved you and I hoped you would change
So I gritted my teeth and didn't complain.
Now you come to me with a simple goodbye
You tell me you're leaving but you won't tell me why
Now we're here at the station and you're getting on
And all I can think of is thank God and Greyhound you're gone
Thank God and Greyhound you're gone
I didn't know how much longer I could go on
Watching you take the respect out of me
Watching you make a total wreck out of me
That big diesel motor is a-playing my song
Thank God and Greyhound you're gone.
Thank God and Greyhound you're gone
That load on my mind got lighter when you got on
That shiny old bus is a beautiful sight
With the black smoke a-rolling up around the taillight
It may sound kind-a cruel but I've been silent too long
Thank God and Greyhound you're gone.
Thank God and Greyhound you're gone...
Roy Clark
Thank God and Greyhound You're Gone
My very first heartbreak. We'd already broken up but were still sniffing around each other. I'd called him to go to the movies and he agreed. On the way home, this song came on the radio. It was a big hit back then, 1976-1977. While driving along, my ex-fiancee sang this song with so much feeling and emotion, I wanted to kill him! This is when I knew that it was, without a doubt, OVER.
Lookin' back over my years
I guessed, I've shedded some tears
Told myself time and time again
This time I'm gonna win
But another fight, things ain't right
I'm losin' again
Takes a fool to lose twice
And start all over again
Think I'd better let it go
Looks like another love T.K.O. (Oh...oh...oh...)
Think I'd better let it go (What you think about it, girl), let it go, baby (Oh, yeah)
Looks like another love T.K.O. (Mmm...mmm...mmm)
Tried to take control of the love
Love took control of me
'Cause you lose all thoughts, sense of time
And have a change of mind
Takin' the bumps and the bruises
Of all the things of a two-time loser
Tryin' to hold on, faith is gone
It's just another sad song
I think I'd better let it go (What you say about it?)
Looks like another love T.K.O. (Oh...oh...ho...whoa...yes)
I think I'd better let it go), let it go, baby (Oh, baby)
Looks like another love T.K.O. (Mmm...hmm...oh...ho...oh...)
Tried to take control of the love
Love took control of me
'Cause you lose all thoughts, sense of time
And have a change of mind
Takin' the bumps and the bruises
Of all the things of a two-time loser
See I try to hold on, my faith is gone
It's just another sad song
And I think I'd better let it go (Let it go, let it go)
Looks like another love T.K.O. (I think I'd better)
Think I'd better let it go, let it go, baby (If I know what's good for you, girl)
Looks like another love T.K.O. (I couldn't stand this pain much longer)

Brad Paisley did the same thing in the Fishin Song
Well I love her
But I love to fish
I spend all day out on this lake
And hell is all I catch
But today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin hole today
She'd be packin all her things
And she'd be gone by noon
Chorus:
Well I'm gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I'm on this lakeshore
And I'm sittin' in the sun
I'm sure it'll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
Yeah I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite....all right!
I do like the funny ones-here's a nicer, kinder breaking up song while I go find"I Wouldn't Have Missed It For the World"
Charles Quillen/Rhonda Fleming/Dennis Morgan
Our paths may never cross again
Maybe my heart will never mend
But I'm glad for all the good times
'Cause you brought me so much sunshine
Love was the best it's ever been
Chorus
I wouldn't have missed it for the world
Wouldn't have missed loving you girl
You've made my whole life worth while, with your smile
I wouldn't trade one memory, cause you mean too much to me
Even though I lost you girl
I wouldn't have missed it for the world
They say that all good things must end
Love comes and goes just like the wind
You've got your dreams to follow
But if I had the chance tomorrow
You know I'd do it all again.
chorus
Oh I wouldn't trade one memory, cause you mean too much to me
Even though I lost you girl, I wouldn't have missed it for the world
another funny one I remember..
"It's Too Late"
Carole King (I think) but I prefer the Isley Bros. version.
