I think Tom Petty et al are a pretty unique band. I know so many songs by them and have never owned an album (shame on me). They get tons of radio play, but have never sold out (so far as I can tell).

Because if you aren't online right when the tickets go on sale, and it's a popular show, you will end up with the same shitty tickets as any other shmoe at any other time. You still have to be there right when they go on sale to get the good tickets. And when the regular tickets go on sale, you can still get good tickets if you get there early. I think that a lot of times that presale crap is jus a scam to get people to join the band's fan club.
I don't have any Tom Petty albums either, but I also know so many songs by him.
I just view it as the same as a call-in sale. Who ever gets through first, gets better tix.
Get this. When I was working in Gainesville Fla the sister of one of the guys in the Eagles showed me her basement wall where Petty had written down his phone number. It was sort like looking at a hieroglyph.

I have regulated to waking up before 10, even on weekends, because of the cat. Otherwise..... Actually, I think it's a good thing.
I'm a 10:00 AM guy. But if I were going to get up for these tix, I'd get up a few minutes early and get on the ticketmaster site ahead of time and just hang for a few minutes until the tix become available. I think that's the best way.
