Dolly Parton has given her support to a group in Kerry who are attempting to break the World Record for most people dressed as Dolly in a single place.
‘DollyDay’ in Listowel will take place on June 24th and comes 11 years after the town broke the World Record for the most people dressed as nuns in one place.
“We smashed it,” DollyDay chair Cora O’Brien said of NunDay.
“We are hopeful that we‘ll have about the same.”
Dolly Parton has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and is worth an estimated $375 million.
Ms O’Brien said she was always a fan of Dolly’s music but has got to know a lot more about her since she began organising the event.
“Dolly herself does so, so much for charity and she has donated herself an awful lot of money to children’s education,” she said.
“As well as that she’s just different; she’s a business woman as well as being a country and western star.
“There’s a lot of different faces to Dolly… So, it’s actually an honour to be doing this in her name.”
Although Dolly is 77, she is still very much an active singer but the committee was hopeful she could find the time to drop by Listowel for DollyDay.
“My sister’s friend’s cousin is actually a cousin of the President of Dollywood,” Ms O’Brien said.
(My sister’s friend’s cousin) That's so Irish.
“So, we got the letter to Dolly and the reply back was that she was looking into our schedule, so we were really holding our breaths for a while there.
“I think the idea was that if she could make it, then she would, but she’s got a new rock album coming out, so she’s very busy.
“But the President of Dollywood is coming in her place.”
Instead, Dolly has donated a two-night stay on her tour bus which will be auctioned off at DollyDay.
Tickets to the event cost €27.79 and the money raised will be donated to Kerry Hospice and Comfort for Chemo.
“When we did Nun Day we did it to raise awareness around mental health - especially suicide,” Ms O’Brien said.
“This time we’re doing it for cancer because a lot of our committee have been impacted by losing people to cancer and people going through cancer treatment.”
DollyDay takes place on June 24th at 6.30 in the Emmett GAA pitch.
All participants must be “instantly recognisable as Dolly Parton” or they cannot take part.
