Other songs were popular and well-known, and still are, from the musical Hair. This is less well-known, and my favorite. Cheryl Barnes sings this from the 1979 motion picture:

@Setanta,
I remember it by Three Dog Night. Never heard this version.

Herman's Hermits had several hits in the mid- and late-1960s, but I always liked this paean to adolescent awkwardness. (I also always appreciated that Peter Noone never tried to sound like an American bluesman.)

An aunt of Paul McCartney once took him to task because they always put out love songs--he responded with "Paperback Writer." There was another song, one of my favorites, which never mentioned love. That song was the 1965 "You like Me Too Much." (Sorry, there's something wrong with the video here, but the sound quality is good.)

Always loved this cut by Steppenwolf off their first album. Just found out it was their first single, but I never heard it before I bought the album.

Here's one of my fave bands and songs from late-'60s-to-early-'70s. IMO, John Cipolina has one of the best rock lead singers and guitarists and cornerstone of the SF sound.

...or if you like the studio version better (slower and more romantic), here it is :

Grab your air guitar 'cause none played or do play Heavy Metal better. Turn it up to 11!

Pavement's version of Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" is sweet, sexy, quirky, and underrated.

Over 7m YouTube views, but feels a little obscure in 2018.

Haunting and delicious. Steve Mason's voice is hypnotic.
