Dog Shelter Woes

My favorite dog possibly ever was killed by a car and left by the side of road for us to find. (he managed to sneak out of the house without us seeing). This was the beginning of the year. I still miss him so much. We do have a puppy that we got the end of the year for my daughters (this dog was dedicated to me and my hubby and less to the kids).

Any way I finally decide maybe I am willing to adopt one - I found one an hour and half away - same breed but a mix. I emailed they gave me data and I called this weekend to see if he was still available. They tell yes and he is here at the shelter not his foster family this weekend so you can come by and meet him, fill out an application and if all goes well have him by Tuesday.

We change up our schedules so we can make the hour and half drive - I get there and ask for him. Sorry he isn't here. What! He was picked up. I said figuring he was picked up by the foster family - I just drove an hour and a half is there any way I can go to the foster home? No he was adopted. I said wait I just called yesterday and was told he was available, I drove an hour and a half -- oh there was confusion on our side. Believe me I was PO'd! Now I am turned off on getting a shelter dog and think I will just bag it. Wasted Father's Day driving 3 hours round trip.

Sorry about the disappointment.

But knowing the confusion at those places, I would have been on the phone confirming the situation before I left the house and even during the ride there.

@PUNKEY,
Thanks - yeah I was not so much disappointed. I told the kids we need to wait and see if the dog is a good fit. I did spend a good amount of time with them on the phone prior to going up there the next day. Asking as much details about the dog and the whole process so there would be no confusion. The woman put me on hold to check to see if the dog was available and would be at the shelter and we discussed the whole process and my situation and the dog's.

So it appeared very clear. As I had said though I didn't have my heart set because I knew I get there and the dog didn't seem as they described so I told the kids we really need to wait to see how he is.

So fortunately at least I was disappointed in that respect - I am happy he has a good home.

I was just PO'd as it was Father's Day and we ended up being split apart so half to go make the drive to see the dog and the other to a different obligation. As their hours were very limited on Sunday I left the house even before they were open. In hindsight yes I should have called on the road but the woman on the phone was so confident of the situation I didn't question it.

@Linkat,
So, ultimately, all you care about is how 90 minutes of your 'self-relative' existence was wasted because you wanted to acquire another 'favourite' (UN-NAMED) Dog, you cherished, so much, it got KILLED due to your fckin NEGLIGENCE.
I hope no creature EVER endures your benevolence.

@mark noble,
That's nice - you know nothing of what happened. Really thoughtful.

I will not even try to explain it to you as just your assumptions here are ludicrous. What kind of idiot makes assumptions like this by a couple of sentences. You have no idea what happened and the circumstances nor the 9 years of spoiledhood by beloved pooch had. How I mourn for him daily and the guilt I have of this even though I was not even at home at the time this occurred.

@Linkat,
It's not 'nice' - Nor was it intended to be.

Your 'story' was about the time 'YOU' sacrificed in 'YOUR' search for a replacement pet - Correct?
Bearing little to No relation to the pet you lost - Correct?

I have NO other information about you or your lost pet - I have not read or viewed ANY other than this thread's post.

And my 'story' is - If other peoples' stories do not align to my expectations - I should desist from opinionating upon.

I, hereby, desist.
