Aaron Bell, 19, was convicted in December of robbing a Kentucky Fried Chicken store in Philadelphia 12 months earlier. It was the same KFC where Bell had worked for the previous two years; he wore no mask or disguise, and all the employees recognized him. He might have learned in those two years that the store's safe is time-locked at 9 p.m., but he started the robbery at 9:15 and thus got no money. Nonetheless, Bell successfully hid from police for three days. On the third day, he decided to report for work at the KFC, acting as if nothing had happened. The manager called police. Timothy Baker was back in jail in Waco, Texas, in January, hours after he had escaped while being held for aggravated robbery. His getaway had taken him to Baylor University, where he broke into a building in order to find a change of clothes from his orange jumpsuit. The building was the Fine Arts Center, where Baker raided a costume closet. He apparently thought he would be inconspicuous if he changed into a 19th-century green wool costume (with rubber galoshes) that made him look like a "leprechaun," said the sheriff later, after Baker was spotted on the street and re-arrested. Said the chairman of the theater department, "He just really stood out." [Waco Tribune Herald, 1-7-03]

(1) The December attempted robbery of a BB&T bank in Chesapeake, Va., was aborted when the robber and the teller arrived at a stalemate. The robber pushed a holdup note across the counter, but the teller read it, said, "I can't accept this," and passed it back. The robber pushed the note through a second time. The teller wadded the note up and tossed it back at the robber, who picked it up and walked out. (2) And the robbery of a liquor store in Greenville, S.C., in February was aborted when the clerk ran out of the store after the perp told him to empty the register, while pointing his bare index finger at him, simulating a gun. Two teenagers (18, 19) were arrested in Hutchinson, Kan., as they arrived on the scene at a music store en route to the Taco Bell they had targeted for robbery. Police got to the music store about the same time as the kids because they had been listening to the kids talk about what they had in mind for the last 20 minutes, by cell phone, which had been accidentally activated (automatically dialing 911) in the pocket of one of the kids. On Thursday, an extremely sympathetic judge in Roanoke, Va., gave Maurice Dooley, 29, a suspended sentence for a February bank robbery; Dooley was not a bank customer and thus couldn't get a check cashed, but then told the teller to try again because he had a gun, and the teller then agreed to cash it if Dooley would allow him to photocopy his driver's license, which Dooley then handed over.
