Lesson learned.

Going forward I will conduct online research before I make another expensive appliance purchase. The Samsung fridge we purchased with the double doors and the freezer drawer on the bottom was supposed to be top of the line, well the icemaker started freezing up just after the warranty was up. We’ve had two service techs come out, they fix it and two months later the same thing happens again. Now we buy a bag of ice and keep it in the freezer drawer.

I googled the model online line and found dozens of complaints, even a class action suit against Samsung because of the icemaker.

Samsung Ice Maker Lawsuits

Quote:
A class action lawsuit has been filed alleging that a defect within the ice makers is causing a number of problems, including, but not limited to the following:

Water leaking to beneath the fridges’ crisper trays (where most people keep fruits and vegetables)

Noise (often described as “loud,” “clicking,” “jarring,” “grinding,” “knocking” or “buzzing”) when the fan hits the “over-iced” compartment

The formation of ice crystals, water droplets and “slushy ice” at the bottom of the ice maker

Ice buckets that are “stuck” and cannot be removed, possibly due to clogged drains

Over-freezing of water in the ice compartment

Its not unusual to regularly see Samsung appliances for sale as "used" or seconds in my local home improvement stores, which says something. I have Ge appliances.

@jcboy,
have you looked at the Consumers Report guides yet? they're still pretty reliable

be cautious around Sub-Zero products, super attractive but lots of claims against them

@ehBeth,
Not yet but that's a good idea. Actually I didn't even think about the consumers report guide. Probably why I always get stuck with crappy appliances Razz

He never reads the reviews before making a purchase, especially if it’s shiny, that’s all he sees, shiny, shiny! Laughing

@jcboy,
Yes sir. Got to look up reviews on anything we purchase these days. I bought a LG refrigerator about 5 years ago thinking it was a good brand. for the past 2 years the upper freezer has been icing up pretty badly. Every two weeks I have to break up the solid ice that forms in there. I know that I have to defrost it and clear the water drain on it, but there is always food in there. My previous fridge, a Frigidaire never had this problem during the 30 so years we had it. But I also have a Frigidaire electric range that has the oven door locked up and I cannot open it. There is no instructions on fixing this problem. It is supposed to do this in the self clean mode, but it is stuck good and will not release.

An extended warranty on an appliance can also be worth the money, even if you do not "need" it that can bring peace of mind.

I've always had high respect for Samsung products, but your post will make me a lot more cautious before buying their products. Thank you for letting us know about your problems.

Some brands have their high end and also low end products. You can buy Whirlpool appliances that are not worth a crap, but I have one of the good models with French doors and the slide out freezer compartment. I love it. But what I wrote here is true of GE also, I believe.

@edgarblythe,
Yep. We had a middling washer and dryer set made by GE. The dryer was very good. The washer was crappy.

@jcboy,
I had all of the problems you have had with your Samsung, but I had a GE. That 2 year old monster broke down often and the techs were puzzled. I wrote to GE and complained but they ignored me...........for a while. Remarkably, GE called me later and offered several options, the last one was they would buy my refrigerator and I could call it a day. I took them up on that and they paid me what I originally paid for that monster........I was shocked, I actually bought another GE, practically the same thing French doors, slide in freezer...and it's been great for the last 7 or 8 years. I thought I would never buy another GE fridge, but I did.

You should write to Samsung, and tell them your problem. If loads of people are complaining online, they will need to do something to fix the problem. I'm sure they are aware of GE's fridge problems, maybe they will buy yours?

@glitterbag,
I finally ordered the new fridge but it won’t be delivered until Monday. The bottom drawer is the freezer, which is working fine. The fridge is digital and last night I noticed the temperature said 51, it was always set at 37, it won’t go below 51 so time to have this piece of junk hauled away.

This one is a frigidaire.

@jcboy,
Well they are going to call me today with a four-hour window when the new fridge will be delivered. This is a pain in the ass too! Having to take everything out and put everything in ice chests. At least the fridge will be cleaned out.
