How do we tell the difference between living and nonliving matter, what is the chemistry, what is the biology?

By loosely defined convention. There is no strict definition of life that really satisfies everyone. Even the ability to reproduce to a pattern doesn't hold because of those pesky crystals...

pesky crystals
Yeah, nothing I hate more than those 'pesky crystals.' How bout any parallels between what we usually think of as living matter and the way crystals do their chemistry? Can we find a link in the math... Mendel's pea plants?
