GROVE, Okla. -- The pastor of an interdenominational church in Grove surprised his congregation with $50 and $100 bills this week, handing out $14,000.
Pastor Steve Dyer of the Newsong Church wants the congregation to invest the money for seven weeks, then bring it back to the church for use in missionary work.
Dyer put $100 bills in red envelopes for adults and $50's in green envelopes for school-age children. The envelopes were passed out Sunday and opened after the sermon on the Parable of the Talents.
The parable is about a landowner who goes on a trip and leaves 'talents', or several year's wages, with three servants. Two servants doubled their talents but the third hid his.
Dyer says he wants to challenge the church to not be afraid, as the third servant was.
Interesting idea. As long as it's a small church where everybody knows everybody, it'll probably work. I just have one nagging question...where'd he get the $14,000?
