Does his theory have any applications anymore? Hasn't it been proven that free hydrogen ions are virtually never found in solution, but rather, that they react with water to form hydronium ions?

I can appreciate learning about the evolution of theories, but it seems this theory dominates over the definition that is a closer approximation of what is happening (Bronsted-Lowry) and the definition which is more broad, not limiting itself to compounds with hydrogen (Lewis).
