Area & perimeter

Can anybody tell me how to arrive at the "area" and "perimeter" of something. My 5th grader has to indicate what the area is and the perimeter of some squares, for example:

/x/x/x/x/
/x/x/x/x/
/x/x/x/x/

for area multiply length by width, 3x's x 4x's = 12 x's squared

for perimeter, just add the lenth of each side, 4x +3x+4x+3x = 14x

The Perimeter is the distance around a figure.. To find a perimeter, add the length of all sides. The area is the top of the figure times the side of the figure. Let me know if this is incorrect

You are correct. Instigate is correct. The calculation for area will only work with rectangles and squares, of course.
