Lemonade!
All rush and excitement!
--eagerness!...
--selling, earning!
visioning the pleased other
eager for what I offer,
the 'grownup-ness' of it all!
a pitcher, lemons
from mother's kitchen,
sugar, ice,
a sign:
'ten cents',
sidewalk counter
an old orange crate,
waiting now
and waiting,
and waiting
at last
a slow
unsmiling
realization.
Six years old,
a first taste
of indifference.
I always try to stop a neighborhood lemonade stands. (Gotten some god-awful stuff to drink, too)
Indifference is a good word to use. Not the rejection, but the sense of not being acknowledged at all is perplexing to children.
@PUNKEY,
Someone once said (of a young child) that there were:
"So many surfaces yet to be scratched."
