Ursula Le Guin was one of my favorite writers.
Her ability to present her ideas, and then to see them from other perspectives through her characters, was what in my view set her apart. She was also a brilliant writer, creating new worlds and new cultures and then describing them with clarity so that the reader could explore them with her.
She passed on Monday after making an undeniable contribution to science fiction, and to literature in general.
She greatly impressed me as a young man, and opened my eyes to a different kind of science fiction. I also liked Vonda Mcintyre, Suzy McKee Charnas, Tanith Lee, Anne McCaffrey, Joanna Russ, Marion Zimmer Bradley.
Le Guin impressed me favourably when she reviewed Samuel R Delany's novel "Dahlgren", characterising the writing as "sossidge-factory", an evaluation I thoroughly agree with.
@centrox,
My favorite of her books was "The Dispossessed" There were two planets... one was pretty close to any Western country on Earth, and the other was a form of Anarchistic Socialism. The protagonist went from the latter to the former.
The exploration of gender, class and government was brilliant.
@maxdancona,
A true treasure, she had a way with words which captured scenery and emotions. Thank goodness we have her library of work to enjoy, a lasting gift from her.
She will be missed.
