Can we say "become wet" in place of "get wet"?
What does "shouldn't" mean here?
"He took his umbrella o that he shouldn't get wet".

@tara85,
To my American ears "get wet" sounds more natural. If you say "become wet" it sounds stilted.

I would say; "He took his umbrella so that he wouldn't get wet."

@maxdancona,
Thank you very much
Why o you use "would" please?

@tara85,
For me, the word "should" implies an obligation. That doesn't make sense in this context. The word "would" implies a possibility. In this context, "he" wants to avoid the possibility of getting wet.

This might be a difference between American and British English. But you will have to ask someone who speaks British English about this.

"He took his umbrella o that he shouldn't get wet".

1. We can say 'become' wet. 'Get' is also acceptable, and more relaxed and informal.

2. In British, and older American English, the modal verb 'shall' (past tense 'should', see Merriam-Webster) has a meaning of intention, prediction or obligation. Thus "I take my umbrella so that I shall not become/get wet" means "I take my umbrella to prevent my becoming/getting wet". This use of 'shall' is bordering on obsolete in British English, and seems to have slipped over the line into complete obsolescence in American English.

@tara85,
Cool! I think that you can say that English is a second language. You seem to be making progress.

For how much longer = for how long into the future? How much longer are you going to make that noise? I can't sleep. For how much longer will English be a world language?
