What does "shouldn't" mean here?
"He took his umbrella o that he shouldn't get wet".
1. We can say 'become' wet. 'Get' is also acceptable, and more relaxed and informal.
2. In British, and older American English, the modal verb 'shall' (past tense 'should', see Merriam-Webster) has a meaning of intention, prediction or obligation. Thus "I take my umbrella so that I shall not become/get wet" means "I take my umbrella to prevent my becoming/getting wet". This use of 'shall' is bordering on obsolete in British English, and seems to have slipped over the line into complete obsolescence in American English.
