sprint nextel merger

Does anyone know exactly when Sprint and Nextel's merger will take effect? I've been looking into getting a cellphone, and most of my friends allready have Nextel, but I'd like to wait until the merger has taken it's complete effect to see what kinds of plans and phones I will be able to get.
