Both are possible; they mean the same thing.

i would say --

"The teams were tied at half time."

"The score was tied at half time."

In British English, "level" is fine, and is very common in sports journalism, especially reports of football ("soccer") matches, e.g. "The teams were level at half-time, and after 77 minutes England won a corner. Alan Ball delivered the ball to Geoff Hurst...". It is commonly used about other sports also.

The scores (or teams) were level at half-time. Two scores were equal to each other.

in Americanese, score is singular, not plural...

"Americanese" is NOT an Italian word. We have "Americanismo" for "Americanization".

I have found that you can use either score or scores in BrE.
