Took out & put in

Please consider the following sentence taken from an American basketball newspaper:

The coach took out the veterans and put in the rookies.

My question is this:

1) Don't you think that it should be "took off" and "put on", at least in British English?

Both "took out ... put in" and "took off ... put on" would be understood.
