Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) Nearly 30 years ago, Alex Ferguson was appointed United manager.

2) Nearly 30 years ago, Alex Ferguson was appointed as United manager.

If both are correct, do they mean the same thing?

If so, which would you use?

Also, are there other ways to say this?

By the way, should I say "United manager" or "United's manager"?

Thank you.

@paok1970,
They do both mean the same. I would probably use number one.

You can say either United manager or United's manager.

You could say he became United manager as well.
