If you stay with someone, does it mean that you have a relationship with that person?

Thank you

@paok1970,
It depends on the context, and it also depends on what you mean by relationship.

I sometimes stay with my sister. I have a relationship with her, that of brother and sister. Sometimes I stay with friends.

@paok1970,
Paok you're to be congratulated for your deep interest in our complicated Eng Lang. Some of us--very few apparently--might like to know more about you: For instance, age, background, Ed., reason for such interest, for choosing a2k, etc etc

Some don't Prof owing to fear of of ID so if you'd like to chat I'm [email protected]

[While I'll be first to concede my writ Eng Lang, w/ cute abbr, punct etc might confuse the esl, I am always available to clarify. Just incidentally whaddya thinka that]

[Like frinstance when I omit the "." 's, "?" 's, etc]

In general to "stay" with someone merely means to spend time in their home, usually a period of at least one night. You would inevitably have some sort of relationship with them, if only that of guest and host.

If you stay in someone's house, a "love relationship" is neither implied nor required.

@paok1970,
Still context. After everything that happened he decided to stay with his wife does imply a romantic relationship. When I went to Somerset I stayed with my brother, does not.

Yes. "Stay with" can mean a number if different things. To stay with your wife after she has shagged the milkman is not like staying with your auntie for a few days, which again is not like choosing to stay with your mobile phone provider. Paok has trouble with phrasal verbs.

\To use the word 'stay' in connection with your wife after she has engaged in sexual intercourse with your milkman, that ism, the fella who leaves full bottles at your doorstep, is not like using it to describe a visit with your aunt

[Incidentally, Software Spellers, 'ism' isd aso a very common missp of 'is']

[Oh do I hadfta 'splain why...
It's 'cause the 'm' is so close to the ',', so you hafta have your boss tell y'bout 'touch typing,']

I like what you wrote, Dale. I think "that ism" is kind of apt, actually. Sometimes our fingers type truer than we know.

@centrox,
Yea thank you Cen, that very thought had also occurred to me. One might say it's God's subtle way of endorsing an idea
