If the following two sentences are both correct, do they have the same meaning?

1) Much of Boston knew about her affairs.

2) Most of Boston knew about her affairs.

There's a subtle difference. The first one means that a great number of people knew but not necessarily the majority of the population, the second means the majority knew, (more than 50%.)
