with the exception of recollections and one or two others, I cant take Miles in large batches. Mostly cause his music is so avant garde that it reminds me of Walter Piston 's performances.

Give me hard Bop any day

Hard Bop? Art Blakey, Hank Mobley stuff?
Not sure if the masses would consider it "cool".
I love it myself.

"In a Silent Way" by Davis is one of my favourites.

Miles mostly comes off like Irish folk music, it never seems to stop.
blakeys good. My choice in jazz has always been tto seek out someting that , at least uses a melody as a starting point , and Im not a big fan of dissonance as a musical trick
I can listen to the MJQ because tey usually staarted with some order. Abdullah Ibraham is my current favorite his work, like some of thhose Yugoslavian jazz bands of the seventies, his work has an exotic twist to the orchestration

One of my favourite Chet Baker tracks is his cover of My Funny Valentine. His deadpan delivery is haunting. I might also suggest virtually anything by Charlie Parker.

You mean from a vinyl standpoint? At Storyville Vol 1, released in late '56, was on the Roost label, # RLP2209. Volume 2, Roost RLP2225, was released in mid '57. Both are mono recordings. The LP "Set" (it really was 2 different albums) trades at a collector value of $50-$150 for "Very Good" to "Very Good++" examples. Of the 2, Vol 1 has the greater collector value - by about 25% - as a standalone unit, as would be typical, but the individual values are commensurate with the set values. Most offerings I saw were for sets, and none were very recent listings, so I dunno about actual availability. Examples graded below "Very Good" may or may not be playable, and typically the album cover itself is pretty messed up, but some are out there for $5 ea on up. I've seen one "Near Mint" copy of Vol 1 offered for $250 - but its been out there at that price several years at least, so I really don't think that can be taken as a "Value". I looked around some, but didn't find anyone offering a "Mint" copy, which would be "Unblemished, Unopened Factory Packaging". For perspective, a Mint Here's Bob Dylan recently sold at auction for $3700 - and it wasn't a first pressing.

Anyhow, I think if you wanna hear the music, you're best advised to get the CD reissue. Its a current market item, any good music dealer - Brick&Mortar or Online, should be able to get it for ya.

Farmer, I'm right about where you're standing on Miles. When I listen to Miles at 17 years of age...fresh outta Juilliard on Parker's Dial masterpieces...why, he's totally in over his head. But Charley heard something that impressed him and it was only after In A Silent Way that I tuned out.

Timber,if I wanna hear the music there's plenty of CD's that deliver. But I collect for the covers and the importance of the LP. I'm not rabid...I let my subscription to Discoveries lapse.
Thanks for rooting around.
I'm actually looking for 2 albums.
1-Getz '57
2. Them on Parrot Records

Been 3 years now and I can't find a reasonable copy.

Sang it on TV. Ah, my young friend, Craven.

The Girl from Ipanema
Words & Music by Vincius De Moraes & Antonio Carlos Jobim

Recorded by Stan Getz, 1964 (#5), vocal by Astrid Gilberto

FM7
Tall and tan and young and lovely

The girl from Ipanema goes walking,

Gm7 F#7 FM7 F#7
And when she passes, each one she passes goes, "Ahhh."

FM7
When she walks, she's like a samba

G7
That swings so cool and sways so gentle,

Gm7 F#7 FM7
That when she passes, each one she passes goes, "Ahhh."

Bridge:

F#+7 F#7 C9
Oh, but I watch her so sadly;

F#m7 D9
How can I tell her I love her?

Gm Gm7
Yes, I would give my heart gladly,

Am7 Dm7-5
But each day when she walks to the sea,

Gm7 F#
She looks straight ahead, not at me.

FM7
Tall and tan and young and lovely

G7
The girl from Ipanema goes walking,

Gm7 F#7
And when she passes, I smile,

FM7 F#7 FM7 F#7
But she doesn't see, no she doesn't see,

But, Brazil 66 is also cool and needs to be heard.

If this has been done, I really don't care. Just wanted to hear it myself.

Thanks Letty .It was my first exposure to the loveliest and most graceful language in the world: Brazilian Portuguese. When I ended up in Portugal later on I was dismayed by the crudity of the original language.

Panz, that song was really hard to sing because of the unusual intervals, and one couldn't cheat on live TV. I'm amazed that the original language was crude. How was it refined in Brazil, I wonder.

Miles Davis - Concerto De Aranjuez (Album: Sketches of Spain)

I rate this album second in Davis' oeuvre to Kind Of Blue.

Davis worked with Gil Evans (one of the great jazz arrangers) to produce a haunting take on Rodrigo's Concierto De Aranjuez. The original (on Spanish guitar) is also worth listening to.

Great pick Pete. Funny thing, I gave my dad the CD one Christmas and though he was a Davis fan, he hated it. Go figure.
