...caused by slippery contact of ball to mat. One can replace the mat, then clean up the roller ball but I don't, instead banging it down occasionally. My sons think I'm nuts, but that's only because I am

Mice with rolling balls are from the stone age! For example the Microsoft Intellimouse came out in 1999. Even my (UK) Government employer provides us with optical mice. They don't need a pad. If you insist on sticking with outdated and inferior technology that's your look-out.

@centrox,
Cen thank you for that report. I turned it over and sure enough, no ball. Then why it's so slow an increasing mystery

Clean the underside; try it without the mat.

Do you have a weak wrist? What is the top of your desk or table made of? Is it rough or smooth?

Cen it's the cursor won't go, not the mouse

Most certainly wood

A typical woody feeling under brown coating of some sort

In desperation I coated the mat w/ yoghurt, which works great. Of course, after it dries,.....dunno

But then 'mem'd how sometimes an on-off switch corrodes, so tried flipping it off-on a few times. Best move yet !!

@centrox,
Thanks for the sugg, Cen. However, cleaning up the switch fixed the problem just fine

I so unaccustomed for the cursor to move so fast that I'm overshooting every time
