@beebzzz,
argh I'm an idiot
I forgot to look at the second part of the question, I submitted the answer of the volume of the total shape

waste of a week :p but thanks, I suppose lesson learned to double check the question aswell from now on then, not just double check the answer

yes found it out, I made it too difficult for myself.

My answer now has 6 digits with the sum of 30. This answer was rounded up, if I had to round it down my answer would be 29.
Furthermore the volume of the sphere is closely to 40% of the volume of the icosahedron

I didn't even had to make it that difficult as to find the volume of the icosahedron, all that is needed is the length of one of the sizes of the equilateral triangle. I shouldn't do these equations at 00.30 in the morning Sad but I really wanted to end top-250 this time :p

yeah -- i got the 6 digits with sum of 30 as well.

i was surprised at how easy it was to find the proper equations. when i first read it, i was thinking "hm... this could take some looking." but it wasn't that bad at all. just had to work carefully.

sorry to hear about your mistake -- better luck next week!!
i almost submitted the answer for the circumscribed sphere, until i re-read the question.

Now that it's over, anyone want to post a solution (with steps) for last week's? It is kind of nice to have the archive of answers available.

well, the instructions for what to do were pretty clear. i did it by hand, making ticks next to each letter when it occurred in the species names.
here's a chart of each letter, it's number of occurrences, and then rank.
A 23 5th
B 11 13th
C 12 9TH
D 2 22nd
E 25 1st
F 2 23rd
G 10 15th
H 12 10th
I 25 2nd
J 3 19th
K 17 7th
L 12 11th
M 9 17th
N 16 8th
O 25 3rd
P 6 18th
Q 1 25th
R 25 4th
S 10 16th
T 12 12th
U 21 6th
V 0 26th
W 3 20th
X 2 24th
Y 11 14th
Z 3 21st

so the letters you are left with (after following the directions were):
E I R A U K T G P
which unscrambles to Geraptiku

@Whohater,
You can change your time zone.. In settings I think.. I changed mine to -10 AKA Hawaii time.. And yes, I live there... Anyways I am no good at math, and this one sounds complictaed... :O I am in my grades advanced Math class, and I'm sTILL so menrtal... This is beyond my range of education.. I'm smart compared to everyone else in this gradew!!! :O Embarrassed

@wertyiu102,
Google is your friend for an equilateral triangle, polyhedron, and volume of a sphere.
Then choose your radius with the utmost of care.

Well I literally spent all day on this, and googled all the formulas and stuff, but my 10 years out of school is starting to show. I don't remember a thing. I used to be really good in math, but as the saying goes if you don't use it, you lose it.

Anyways, either I'm way off or your all wrong. I got 210. And I'm not even gonna tell you how i got it cuz i don't even know anymore. i did a lot more work then necessary -- or rather maybe not enough, idk..... ughgh.... next week Smile

@rookiehero,
sorry, but at least this one is pretty straightforward. all you need to do is google up the formulas (i don't think anyone of us here knew them in the first place) - they are really easy to find, and then do some calculating. there is really no point in asking us to just give you the answer.

For those that are coming here and are really stuck getting started (and want to work it out instead of just being given the answer):
1. A 20-sided figure with equilateral triangle sides is called an icosohedron, in particular, a regular icosohedron.
2. The largest sphere that can be placed in a regular polyhedron touches at the centers of the sides (or faces) and is called the inscribed sphere. (The smallest outside sphere is called the circumscribed sphere, but we don't care about that one this week.)
3. All of the formulas for the icosohedron and the inscribed sphere are going to be specified in terms of the length of one edge of the icosohedron. Geometrically, an edge of the icosohedron is going to be one side of an equilateral triangle.
4. You are going to want to use a calculator because there is a lot of multiplying, dividing and taking roots involved.

If you don't understand the concepts of area, volume and roots, give it up and come back next week for a new Lenny. Sorry, but you are going to need to remember at least the concepts from your elementary/primary math classes to be able to understand this problem. You will also need the ability to do some algebraic manipulation of equations. (Multiply or divide both sides by the same value, take roots of both sides, substitute in for a value, etc., but nothing that isn't covered in first-year algebra.)

@wertyiu102,
Oh, you never have to do a Lenny. I skipped last week's - I was late, I was busy and I already had the prize, so it wasn't worth the effort. I really dislike unscrambling words, too.

well, the surface area of the icosahedron Would be the area of the triangle x20. But surface area isn't even a part of this problem. (and neither is the volume of the icosahedron either.) you are asked for the Volume of a Sphere which will fit inside it. there are websites that will give you simple equations to determine this.
