Suppose you have, say, a stone tablet of some sort. The tablet has 16 pieces missing. But lucky you, you have the pieces! You can tell by looking at the pieces which ones are the four corners, which ones are the eight side pieces, and which ones are the inside pieces. Otherwise, you can't tell where on the tablet they should go or how they should be oriented.

If it takes 90 seconds to place all of the pieces, how many days will it take to try every possible combination? Please round to the nearest full day.

I've already gotten it wrong--I forgot the 90 seconds when I double-checked my answer Confused

I know there's some kind of a formula for this kind of question. I'll try to find it.

For a few months now, they've been ending the contest on Wednesday around the time they update the news. The new LC still comes out on Thursday though.

(unfortunately, I have no help to lend to the actual LC this week...)

(6144 * 6144 * 6144 * 90) / 1440 = answer

can anyone confirm?

I got 24192, but I've always been bad at these things so I could be completely wrong. Plus, it says to round, and I didn't need to...

(4! * 4! * 8! * 90) / (60 * 60 * 24) = 24192 days
no rounding required

I just found this board last week and it really helped me with the LC. But, I am pretty sure that the above answers are wrong.

I got 268.8 Days as the answer.

David
You forgot to multiply by 90 (seconds)

I got the same answer 24192 days

4! (corner pieces)
8! (side pieces)
4! (inside pieces)
90 (seconds)

divided by the number of seconds in a day (60*60*24)

so we get....

90*((4!*4!*8!)/(60*60*24)) = 24192 days

exact same answer

Here is how i worked it out:
The 4 corner pieces have 24 different possiblities.
The 4 inside pieces have 24 different possibilities.
The 8 outside pieces have 40320 different possibilities.
24 x 24 x 40320 = 23224320
23224320 / 60 / 60 / 24 = 268.8 Days
Round it to 269 Days

Sorry, i forgot to multiply by 90 sec

24192 Days is correct

David, you COMPLETELY forgot to factor in the "90 seconds" bit.

Your answer is completely right... if you could try a combination every second.

Take your answer and multiply by 90. What do you get?

Maybe I'm not understanding the question (or the solution), but I thought it took 90 seconds to place the full set of pieces. So I would have used 90/16 in the calculations. Does this make sense?

*wonders if anyone is still around*

You have to figure out which piece goes where
To match up the corner pieces alone, there is a total of 4*3*2*1 (or 4!) combinations

You have to find the correct piece for each slot first Smile

Its the center peices that are the trick not only can they go in each of 4 places but they can be oriented 4 ways - thats 4 times as many possible ways or is it 4 x 4 more different possible ways
