Excellent! I'm now... halfway up the high score table, but I'm getting there! =p *shakes fist at mom10001*
@wertyiu102,
Quote:I won!!!! not first 250 Sad but... I PUT A PERIOD IN!!!! OMGZZ
Me too. I put in a period. It's not punctuation-- it's part of his name. But apparently they accepted it both ways. That's good to know for the future... altho no guarantee they'll be consistent. LOL
Suppose you have a grassy field, and Kaus eat grass at a constant rate. Keep in mind, the grass keeps growing continuously.
48 Kaus can clear all the grass off the field in 90 days.
120 Kaus can clear all the grass off the field in 30 days.
How many Kaus would be needed to clear all of the grass in 16 days? Round up to the nearest whole Kau.
@Jen Aside,
any ideas?
i already tried proportions, but it didn't work
@starleogirl09,
It wouldn't be a proportion problem since it deals with rates.
Does it take a certain amount of days for the eaten grass to grow back long enough for a kau to eat?
Let's see... it takes 2.5 times as many Kaus to clear the field in 1/3rd of the time.
Now, we have 16/30, or 0.53333... of the time to clear the field. So we need to find out the multiplier to use for that.
It's like an analogy:
2.5 times as many Kaus is to 0.333... of the time
as X times as many Kaus is to 0.53333... of the time.
>_> Man, I'm terrible at math. But I think I MIGHT be on the right track.
I think this might involve calculus... related rates.
It's all math. This was very familiar, actually! There's an Ask Marilyn column with pretty much the same problem but different numbers.
http://www.parade.com/askmarilyn/archive/Sundays-Column-11-16-08.html
70 x 24c = a + 24b, so 1680c = a + 24b (first fact given)
30 x 60c = a + 60b, so 1800c = a + 60b (second fact given)
which means 120c = 36b
how does she jump to that conclusion? xD
I dont know why this should make sense but I submitted 188.
sounds reasonable B) Im not doing stuff like this in math right now so whatever...
@Annodompje,
Use linear combination to cancel out the a's.
Anyways, I got an answer over 205 but less than 220.
Never mind..xD already see it xD
Basically what I did was come up with a formula:
a / (b - c) = d
A is the amount of grass on the field.
B is the number of cows you have.
C is the number of cows it would take to cancel out the growth of the grass (keeping in mind that the grass is continuously growing).
D is the number of days it takes to clear the field of all grass.
You already have the B (48, 120) and D (90, 30) values, so you can substitute them in and solve for C. Once you figure out what C is, you can determine what the A value is. And then all you have to do is solve for the D value that Neopets wants you to figure out (16).
@Annodompje,
Maybe this is more clear:
1800c = a + 60b
- 1680c = a + 24b
---------------------
120c = 36b
The breakdown of that Ask Marilyn article helped me, I also got between 200 and 220 & it seemed to make sense. I never like the maths ones, though!!
Incidentally, does anyone know how to get the gold trophy? I've been in the top 250 twice but I'm still on silver - is a cumulative thing or a speed thing?
@polarsurf,
I got 192 and that seems pretty reasonable.
@Jen Aside,
I used Marilyn's theory and got an answer between 100 and 110. Hmmm. I did it 3 separate times and came up with the same answer. (crosses fingers)
@Kate-,
I dont understand
1800c = a + 60b
- 1680c = a + 24b
---------------------
120c = 36b
Where do u get 1800 and 1680?
And for a / (b - c) = d
How do u get C? I dont get it XD
you can estimate the real answer, its not hard.
i used an equation and i got my original estimate as the answer.
