ok I submitted an answer- good luck to all on this one!

Thanks Catfood for the help with the formula! Between you and my TI-84 I think I got it!

you're welcome. I will explain the formula sometimes tonight if I have time, latest tomorrow because I need to draw a sphere Smile

I might just ask my Math professor tomorrow also.

Good luck with your sphere! I'm working on matrices. Just a little shift in gear for to this problem Smile

I think I factored it wrong. Sad

I did submit wrong too. Sorry if I made you submit a wrong one. Just re-editted it.

Cat, I'm using your formula, but I keep getting a negative answer...If I remember my math correctly you can't have a negative volume x_x. Wonder what I'm doing wrong with your formula.

I think I factor something wrong, I tried to resolve it now.

I recommend the following formula for a partially filled sphere:

volume = (Pi * h2 * r) - (Pi * h3 / 3)

yeah, I think that's the correct one. I just went through my whole step. I uploaded the proof for the formula too. Just need to draw a sphere for better visual understanding.

There are only two formulas to calculate, the calculus part to to show one of the formula only

What is H?
So what exactly is the value of 'h' in catfood's formula?

h is the max height of the water level, calculated by the pressure formula.

Hey catfood I think your solution gives the volume in cubic meters and you want liters...

if that's the case, you take that solution, multiply by 100^3 to get cubic cm and divide by 1000 for L

I already multiple by 1000 since 1 m^3 = 1000 dm^3 = 1000 liters

Actually when you calculate everything without converting... You obtain an answer in cubic m... So all you need to do is multiply that by 1000 to obtain your answer in cubic dm which is equivalent to litres.

1 m^3 = 1000 dm^3 = 1000 L

My account is suspended right now, but I did have the right answer... do you think I still get the prize?

Markd, I would think so. We could check for you to see if your avatar count went up or a trophy appeared, if you like

I don't think they allow suspended/frozen accounts to accumulate anything. That's not really fair to the players who haven't been suspended/frozen. I'd brought this up before WRT frozen Neopets being on the high score tables for the Book Club and Gourmet Club back when Adam was still active, as I accidentally got a cc: FROM HIM that said, "Yeah, that's a good point."

Yes, the purpose of this forum is to post the prize-winning solution as quickly as possible, in part so that....

Another 'math student' wrote:

...math tutors (and professors) don't receive insistent, even belligerant, demands for "help" for this "take-home quiz" question ("due tonight!").

Note: This "math homework question" has already been posted, multiple times, to Yahoo Answers, and to at least one or two math tutoring forums already. (There's a third of which I'm aware, but you have to be a member to view the thread, including the Neopian's cussing-out of the tutor who knew this was not actually homework.)

I'll try to be back later with the correct solution for Neopians to copy. I apologize for the delay.

Eliz.

Gahhh...

ok so, I got the nps and the crepe but they didn't elevate my account to a 3x winner.

Grrr.

Anyways, I got 212270 as well using the P=Dgh and the volume of a spherical cap

(p.s. neopets really loves the spherical cap formula, don't they... they used it in that one about the grarrl egg)

(p.p.s. I was thinking about starting a LC guild, would any of you be interested?)
