I googled 'displacement of water versus volume' and found this:

http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/eng99/eng99446.htm

Look at the SECOND reply, the first one is nonsense.

There is says that the 'displacement of a ship is equal to its weight, which of course must be equal to the weight of the water displaced'.

Doesn't that mean that if we find the weight of the water, we'll know the weight of the egg? Does that help with finding the volume?

Maria, do u speack spanish?
we know the weight of water...
1 litr of water = 1 kilogramo

Sorry, I'm only 6 months into my first ever spanish lessons, so no =) but I do get that 1 liter of water weighs 1 kg, or 1000 grams.

It also says so in this site http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/www/subsection1_4_2_0_7.html

1 cm3 weighs 1 gram. So

280,000 * 1 / 100 = 280 grams for the water displaced.

no no 280,000 cm3=280,000 grams

Yes yes, sorry - I meant 280 kg, metric =)

Darkiaia, I think pinerose is right.
I'm 99.9% sure that the volume of water displaced = volume of the egg.
So isn't this just a simple ratio?

to clarfiy, I meant volume of water displaced = volume of the egg under the water.

yes...
that's why

If 280000 cc = 72% of egg
x = 100%

i agree, but in this case, and haven't got the size of the sphere...
volume=mass= water out

aha I may be on this one...

object floats.. so water displaced = MASS

only 72% submerged (leave surface area at the door, this shape is perfect so we will assume 72%) - so density is 72% of density of water

Density=Mass/Volume

so if you take the density of 1g/cc for the water and take 72%

.72g/cc=280,000/V

find for V 388888.88 etc

SO it WAS so simple as 72% of the displacement!

nice, my stubborness has wasted time Smile

answer=388889

good day

water displacement = weight of object, regardless of amount of water within the object. this means that to find 100% weight..... u should divide the water displacement by 72 and times by 100. the answer is asked for in cubic centimeters so whatever answer you get for this is the answer you should give. I hope i'm right lol. and i hope ive helped if i am

or maybe more because people get tangled into this...or this LC is way easier or we didnt consider something
