and lastly
people keep asking what if the angles aren't 45 degrees. Because the blue lines are both the same length, and they are parallel, they must have angles of 45 degrees, if the angle measurement was anything else, the lines wouldn't be congruent.

How I figured
I got a radius of 28cm

Quote:
In the following diagram, each blue line is 24 centimetres long, and the red line is 16 centimetres long. Assume the shape in the centre of the circle is a perfect square, and it is exactly centred in the circle. Also assume that all three coloured lines are parallel to each other.

The square in the middle is a perfect square and the lines are all parallel.

This means the group of three lines can be drawn in all four directions.
This gives 4 red lines and 8 blue lines. The blue lines begin to connect and create four 48 cm blue lines.

You get a shape like that below
\ X /
X[ ]X
/ X \

X is where blue lines cross and \ are red lines (sorry for no pictures

The blue lines cross in the middle pint, so each line is 12 cm
The blue lines, can create a square 24cm x 24cm (with 12cm comming off the square).

In the middle off the square is a perfect diamond.

Use Pythagorean theorem (a^2 + b^2 = c^2). Half of each side of the square (where the corner of the diamond touches) is 12cm.
12^2 +12^2 =squareroot(288)

That means each side of the square in the middle is Squareroot(288)
Used Pythagorean theorem to find the angle inside the middle square.
sqrt(288)^2 + sqrt(288)^2 = c^2
288+288=c^2
sqrt(576) = 24
Half of that line is 12 and added to the red line (16cm) = 28cm

with that said, you can also use Intersecting Chords Theorem which states when two chords intersect each other inside a circle, the products of their segments are equal.

so in this case it would be

24*24=16*a
576=16*a
576/16=a
36=a

so the remainder of the diameter would be 36

radius = (16+36)/2
r=52/2
r=26

manhole covers
Chibikity,

Round is not the only shape--there are other shapes that satisfy your
criterion (of not falling through a slightly undersized hole of the same
shape). They are called curves of constant width.

But round is much easier to manufacture, and they require no
alignment when placing them into the hole. Also, the cover
doesn't have sharp corners, which could be a hazard.

LOL ! you went to WIKI???!

1 or 2 pages back I posted proving why it couldn't be 28 cm. Then, since Dr. Math said it was 26, it is 26!

Refreshing everyone on the riddle:

Embarrassed I overlooked that. That makes it easy.

Yes, you are right about the diagram; it is not to scale. The diagram threw me off. :/ Roly_Poly_Sandwiches also posted an interesting point, which checks out.

Also, I am not sure why DarkWyz's method doesn't work out to be 26, perhaps it is because of the diagram again, and you have to assume that the 24-line is being bisected perfectly.

Is there a new lenny conundrum yet?
I would assume that they would have one by now since it's wednesday...and I got my prize from last week's puzzle.

by the way, I am new Smile

If you assemble these puzzle pieces correctly, you should be able to figure out what to do next.

Is there a trick? or is it straightforward?

Aww... I thought it would actually be a two step puzzle: unscramble a picture to get a word conundrum. That would be fun... because the conundrums only come out once per week, so the other 6 days are so boring.

It would be good for some kind of scavenger hunt: first the original page will have some kind of riddle, that you solve, and in the address bar you have to use that answer to go to another page that cannot be linked to, where there's another riddle, ETC.

Here's an example: www.freewebs.com/thebigriddle

They've done a couple of those before, like the ones that seem to have no actual puzzle posted on the page. It takes longer for them to set up, obviously Confused
