Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) Manchester United are currently at the top of the league.

2) Manchester United are currently top of the league.

3) Manchester United are currently on the top of the league.

If all three are possible, do they mean the same thing?

If so, which would you use?

Thank you.

@PUNKEY,
There's a reason people read the OED instead of the Lansing 'Murican Dictionary. Thank you for illustrating what that reason is. You may think Man U are a "soccer" team, and it's fine if you think that, as far as I'm concerned, as long as you don't try to "correct" people who call them a football club.

In Britain people commonly treat collective nouns as plural.

@PUNKEY,
No, football teams are given a plural. Manchester united are a bunch of arseholes, not Manchester United is a bunch of arseholes.
