Field & line up

In soccer, is it correct to use "to line up" as a verb with the meaning as "to field"? In other words, is it possible to "line up a team of players" or should I use "to field a team of players"?

Thank you.

A rough survey shows that 'field' is used transitively, and 'line up' intransitively:

Quote:
Liverpool fielded just three of their 11 starters who beat Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Sunday

Quote:
Liverpool fielded a side blended with those who require game time, such as Philippe Coutinho after his back problem

Quote:
Arsenal fielded the shortest team of outfielders in the Premier League this weekend

Quote:
Arsenal lined up with three centre-halves

Quote:
Arsenal lined up with something approaching a first choice starting eleven

Quote:
Arsenal lined up in a 4–4–2 formation, with Ian Wright paired alongside John Hartson

Better to say that 'field' is usually used transitively, and 'line up' usually used intransitively
