Should I use the "present perfect" or "the simple past" in the sentence below?

Over the past year, our company's sales increased by 85%.

or

Over the past year, our company's sales have increased by 85%.

So ask3ed my BH, who is much smarter'n me, and she agreed

But there must be a subtle diff !! So, FBM, Rag, Blue, Mac, Punk, Rog, Hal....help...
