@jeremykong,
Think about it. Kids are taught about interesting times in History to keep them engaged. One of the most popular topics is Nazi Germany, very interesting, but you wouldn't want to live through it.

Harry Lime puts it quite well.

Fred R. Shapiro who is the editor of “The Yale Book of Quotations” has noted that: “No authentic Chinese saying to this effect has ever been found”. In addition, Ralph Keyes stated in “The Quote Verifier” that nobody has ever been able to confirm the Chinese origin claim. The earliest recorded allegation that the saying exists is in a 1936 speech by the British politician Austen Chamberlain, who said it was told him by a diplomat who had "been to China".

@jeremykong,
As a Chinese, I don't think it's a usual curse. I looked up the dictionary, and it said " 'May you live in interesting times', often referred to as the Chinese curse, is the purported translation of an ancient Chinese proverb and curse. However, no Chinese source has ever been found."
And I looked up its translation, actually in Chinese “祝你生活愉快” is a polite greeting, for example, before you hang up with call center, they may say this.
