Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) Did you pay attention to the news this past week?

2) Have you paid attention to the news this past week?

If both are possible, do they mean the same thing?

If so, which would you use?

Essentially, Centrox is correct--however, many Americans would also use the second expression. Yes, they both mean the same thing.
