Sure!

Another update, a payment scheduled for Monday or Tuesday should clear off one of the credit cards and I will achieve the goal of cancelling it next week.

I will still need to work on the two others but cancelling that one will be nice.

Pay off--but do not cancel.

Your credit history
The types of credit you use

If the Financial Institutions of America see that you're not spending all the money that you could, they are delighted to let you spend their money.

Also cancelling credit cards drops your credit rating by a few points. Last year Mr. Noddy lost his wallet twice and impulsively applied for a charge card at Radio Shack. Cancelling two Master Cards and a Radio Shack card dropped our credit rating (temporarily) by 60 points.

Interesting. It wasn't an account I wanted to keep. I opened it (a Best Buy card) because I needed to send my brother a laptop quickly.

I might get a Discover card for the cash back.

Another update:

I am adding paintball to my list. I played on Saturday and am hooked.

Craven -- get that Discover card. We've been putting nearly everything on it for a few years now. Groceries, clothing, medical expenses, eating out, trips, etc. We get several hundred dollars a year back on it. Definitely the best card to have. Some places won't take it, so we still keep a Visa card handy for those times.

Keep the Best Buy card--you don't have to use it.

If you're not planning to use it, don't carry it with you.

By the by, do you have copies of everything you carry in your wallet? Believe me, having a master list mitigates the exasperation of loss/theft.

Yup, tis the plan. I don't use paper money so it should be interesting to see what kind of cash back I get.

I'm just trying to decide on whether I want their 2% on everything card or their gas or restaurants one.

I wasn't aware they had a different one for gas & restaurants. What sort of deal are they offering on that? It would have to be really good to offset the cash back on the clothes, groceries, etc.

I think it boils down to 1% on everything and 5% on the specific item (gas or restaurant, depending on the card) and you can double it (i.e. 10%) if you take gift certificates instead.

You can see more here:

Gas card

Quote:
Rewards: With this Cashback Bonus program, you will earn a cash award on all qualified purchases, up to 5% of each gas purchase and up to 1% of each other purchase, based on your annual level and type of purchases, with your first $1500 in purchases accruing awards at 5% or 1% respectively. You will not earn a Cashback Bonus award on annual gas purchases in excess of $25,000. Transactions must be sent to us under merchant category codes 5541 and 5542 to qualify as a gas purchase for purposes of calculating your Cashback Bonus award. For purchases made at select warehouse clubs, discount stores and their affiliates, you will accrue a cash award at a rate of .25%. Get up to 10% Cashback Bonus award when you exchange your total cash award for up to double the amount in gift cards or certificates from our Cashback Bonus Partners. Award is redeemable in $20 increments. Other restrictions apply. You will receive complete Cashback Bonus Terms and Conditions with your Card.

That's the gas one and the restaurant one is pretty much the same, except for restaurant merchant codes.

I was looking at the shell card (mastercard) and it gives 5% back on gas and 1% on everything else.

I'll prolly get the default discover and the shell card.

Sounds like a plan. Some restaurants don't take Discover, though...it costs them extra, like American Express.

I've made some changes and the overall life experience has been better.

I returned to salsa dancing lessons, to playing soccer once a week, I will start italian lessons on the next week, I picked up reading again and I asked for more duties around the house... it's going well.

College deadline missed...

Other updates:

Paintball: I've been a few times, have my own marker and love it. I'll probably go every month.

Tennis: Haven't played in ages, it's been raining too much in San Diego.

Basketball: I've been playing a few times a week at the gym, usually during my lunch time with other nuts who play instead of lunch.

Drawing: I haven't touched it. But hey, typing is strong. ;-)

I am considering adding indoor soccer, in the form of a league.

I am considering surfing, perhaps in the summer or later in the year.

I want to learn to skate (all).

I have started drinking more, so that's one resolution I am living up to.

I had a breakthrough in Japanese this week and may add it to my list to tackle in earnest.

I met a girl who speaks Portuguese, I like her so that might take care of that.

I had a lot of fun at carnival and am considering joining a samba school to play percussion with them.

I'll update my list and reprioritize when stuff settles down (been a crazy year).

Way to go! I can't dance to save my life, but am considering that as a goal (it would be a tough one for me, since dancing feels so stupid to me when I'm the one doing it).

Soccer is a good one too, I took a break at work today and was kicking a ball around in the parking lot (I carry a basketball, soccer ball, tennis balls and racquet, clothes shoes etc in my trunk so I play sports any chance I get).

I couldn't/didn't dance anything before I started taking dance lessons, they helped me loosen my body up a bit, I felt stupid when I danced but lessons are a great experience because it works kinda like a support group for non-dancing people. The important thing is dancing IS fun after all.

I started italian this monday and that seems like it'll be fun also and hopefully I really get to go to Italy on August.

I might adopt the ball-in-trunk carrying technique as it seems a good idea.

Works wonders, today the president of my company and some other managers all got the basketball jones and we went out and hit the courts. I had all my stuff in my trunk waiting to play.

Craven, I can hardly conceive being so clear & organized about goals. If it's OK with you, I think I'll print your first post as a guide for Just How Clear one can be about these things. My life has always been Way More Haphazard than that.

Big admiration for you!
