Timber - I have never done a course where extensive evidence of wide reading was not required.

I DO know that folk I know who have moved to the US to teach have talked about, to us, bizarre stuff, like sociology students in upper years, being assessed by papers where you choose from a range of answers* - you know, a, b, c etc (can't remember the name of the damn things).

I have never heqrd of "challenging" - what is it?

*That would be multiple choice questionnaires, BTW.

Mind you, in honours english, we eventually teamed up and each read about 25% of the hundreds of rather less than brilliant poems/plays/books we were expected to read in addition to the main texts for each topic - and wrote up and exchanged what we called "potted plots" for each other.

I also confess that, once, when I was doing my post-grad DipEd. - a course known for its appalling content and teaching staff, I once used one of the hoary 20 odd year old essays that were passed down from generation to generation of students, apparently without remark by any of the sleepy lecturers/tutors.

I was so disgusted with myself after that episode, that I marched out of the course two thirds of the way through - and have never willingly entered a school since!

"Challenging", or "Testing Out" as it also is known, is essentially demonstrating one has sufficient mastery of the course material - and generally that one has adequately completed any ancillary reading or other assignments as may be pertinent - to satisfy the requirements for a passing grade in that course, regardless of classroom, lecture, or lab time actually done. In its simplest, and probably most common form, it might amount to legitimately qualifying for acceptance into an advanced course without actually having the required prerequisite preliminary courses on one's transcript - sorta like "Credit for Life Learning". Its not a sort of thing ammenable to "cheating"; the challenger must demonsrtate grade-qualified comptence and achievement. In many respects, its quite similar to "skipping a grade" in the K-12 primary and secondary education years, but pertains only to one selected particular course. The successful challenger passes the course and qualifies to move on by satisfactorily completing essentially the same work as would students sticking to the more conventional track, but does so without similar time invested in achieving the legitimately earned grade.

I added mastering chess to my list and reprioritized.

I've almost reached my typing goal and am actually already starting my PHP and SQL goals.

Cool!

I did one of these at a similar point in my life. Started with "get my graduate degree", ended three years after "have a kid." (I was already engaged at that point so wasn't like trawling for possible dads with one eye on biological clock.) I'm about due for another, as I'm a year past when that plan wrapped up.

I have reached an intermediate typing goal, I am now touch typing and no longer require much effort for the speed goals (just using it on a day to day basis will get me there) so I've split it into two, one acheived goal is learning to touch type and the other is a higher goal of 110 wpm.

I conflated PHP and SQL temporarily as I have been approaching them jointly. I moved them to the top of my list as they occupy the most work right now.

I moved piano onto my list as I have purchased the software and keyboard.

I added a financial goal (eliminate a credit card that I had to aquire to send a laptop to my brother overseas).

I added surfing as a future goal.

I moved photoshop into the live list as a quick session with a grapic artist gave me enough of a notion to be able to explore on my own.

I shuffled my priorities a bit due to some unlisted goals.

What kind of keyboard did you get? I noticed tonight of some of these are your real pictures you bare a strong looking toward of of those google guys and am now wondering if you've applied to work there?? I think I'd give it a shot if I lived down there (well I'll be in the admin\finance part of the business) but the way it looks everyone gets some sort of the same screening criteria.

ps I hope the resemblance thing did not offend you?? Embarrassed

On the typing can you do it in the dark and with the keyboard on your lap? I find placement in the same place on my lap is critical or things are much worse than normal.

Here's mine:

1. Get a part-time, home-based, flexible, paying job.
2. Devise and implement plan to finally get involved in the local Deaf community that does NOT involve volunteering if I can help it.
3. Resolve sozlet's health problems.
4. Get back to old workout schedule.

There's more, but those are the ones I think of immediately. Starting #1 today.

I will:

Lost my last extra 15 pounds.

Become slightly more computer literate.

Cultivate patience and serenity--this one's the challenge.

Ok, I had not done anything as I said based entirely on my lack of motivation due to winter depression so this is a preliminary list (stealing Craven's format):

# Feel better -
Goal: Me not thinking about my health at almost any time
Dependencies: Figure out what's wrong with me or if there even is something.
Plan: Doing the stuff on this list, if it doesn't work. Go see a doctor.
Timeline: Half a year

# Exercise -
Goal: Get me in athletic shape.
Dependencies: Me beating my indisposition to do so.
Plan: Get up early and jog for a half an hour.
Timeline: A week to get started.

# Learn foreign language -
Goal: learn foreing language, preferably italian.
Dependencies: me finding a school in the city
Plan: enroll and learn away
Timeline: A week to have information

# Soccer -
Goal: learn soccer
Dependencies: having people to practice with
Plan: find people to play with a least once a week
Timeline: none

# Read -
Goal: Read more literature books
Dependencies: me
Plan: Read a book every 2 weeks on average
Timeline: start this week

# Write -
Goal: Write stories and/or poems
Dependencies: accomplishing reading goal
Plan: sit and write even if I don't feel inspired
Timeline: none

# Work -
Goal: Get my first job
Dependencies: find a good job and accepting me
Plan: ask around for job offerings
Timeline: none

# Dance -
Goal: Return to salsa dancing or find another genre
Dependencies: beating my tendency to stay home
Plan: standarize a weekly schedule that includes dancing
Timeline: none

There might be some other things as there are way to basic... just thinking posting this here might help me motivate myself a little.

I played painball on Saturday and liked it a lot. I will add it to my list of "new ****".

I'm now typing with all fingers without missing the ole hunt and peck. So I'm nearly ready to declare that a done deal.

Piano has been slow, but I've gotten a few notes and songs down.

In regard to college I do not think I can cut loose all my work by the 31st (I have about 180 days of work to wrap up) so I'll probably have to start later.

I'm impressed. Would you adopt a surogate grandmama/cheering section?

Keep enlarging your dominion.
