Goldfish Care Advice Please

I have my brother's goldfish (Ginger) lodging with me, as there was no room at the Inn. It was in a plastic bowl with murky water (it's 1 year old). I've cleaned it and it seems quite happy. Today I have been out and bought a new, bigger bowl (11 Ltr) and an Elite underwater filter. Please could anyone answer the following guestions:

If I set up the new bowl and treat the water - how long should I leave it before I put Ginger in?

Are fish aware of the ornaments - or is it better to leave room for a good old 6" by 14" swim?

Can you tell if a goldfish is male or female?

Should I introduce another fish - is it aware of loneliness?

In the wild are they solitary?

My brother said that he ran out of fish food and fed Ginger on breadcrumbs for a week - I know this is cruel, but, would it have done her any harm?

Is ordinary fish flakes enough for her - or should I supplement her diet with anything else (not live)?

I know that it's a boring topic, and I do not feel it's a good thing to have a fish in a bowl, but I just want to give another living creature a better quality of life. I also feel that given the timeing of her arrival, she's a bit of a special xmas fish.

Thanks for bothering Very Happy

Let the water sit for at least 24 hours so that the chlorine can dissipate and the water reaches room temp.
Re: ornaments/accoutrements for the interior of the tank/bowl, fish do seem to appreciate something in the tank that they can hide behind/under... but they probably enjoy aquatic plants that they can nibble upon more than anything else.
As to companions, depends upon the individual fish... some fish are aggressive and may tend to bully others.
Re: feeding... bread crumbs are alright in the short term, but lack some essential nutrients; so in the long term are not a good idea.
Since some feeding compounds contain viable insect eggs, do make sure that the container is airtight so you don't end up with escapees starting colonies of beetles and such around your house.

The problem with goldfish is that they deposit HIGH amounts of ammonia into thier water. Adding anoter one may prove to be toxic. A filter in thier water was a very smart thing to add. I am not sure adding another one would be wise though.

Take a piece of cucumber, about the size of a quarter and add it to her tank every other day. THe bread crumbs have salt in them and it can back up the fish's body. The cucumber gives added nutrients and also can help in preventing ........

ug.... I have forgotten the name of the disease.
Shocked

Anyways.. it is a disease fresh water fish get from too much salt in thier tanks.. It makes them float belly up....
Cucumber can help eliminate the possibility. After the breadcrumbs I would watch the fish.
If the fish does start to swim belly up, give it fresh peas.
Flake food is perfect other wise.

Oh thanks so much everyone - I didn't think anyone would reply. I was thinking of posting it as 'I've had sex with my goldfish' just to lure people in! Laughing But then they wouldn't be the type to answer my qeries on goldfish care.

I've set the tank up - got one wrinky hand from 'feng Shuing' the ornaments. I've got the filter set on 2.....the water is slightly rippling - is that OK? I did turn it on at the highest, which turned it into a whirlpool and I had to Feng Shite the ornaments all over again!

I'll put the fish in tomorrow - is it possible to sex it?

I've tried to make it's environment as gender neutral as possible

A cuppla questions: Why has it got pooh trailing out of it's arse since last night - was the bread?

I'm thinking 'new home = new name" any suggestions - I'd be honoured!

A crystal clear, rippling nirvana awaits...............................?

Probably the most valuable advice for keeping goldfish is knowing where to buy new goldfish.

This, really, is the only thing you need to know.

Lash....

I couldnt have said it better myself. ;-)

Sex a fish....
the two fins on the bottom of the fish , the ones that are close to the face area? Those mean male.
If there is only one fin and it is farther back .. then it is female.

Embarrassed i hope i remembered that correctly.
But that is how you sex a fish... unless you want to get perverted or something...
then you can sex your fish anyway you want.. Laughing

Thank you for all your posts - you have been a great help. The 'finned one' is having mad bouts of very fast swimming, it looks as happy as a goldfish could be! I'll put a turkey leg in the tank on xmas day, just so it feels part of the festivities.
