Which of the following sentences is correct?
1) Simple Minds were a band formed in the 80's.
2) Simple Minds were a band formed in the '80s.
Thank you.
Several decades ago you would write e.g. the 50’s or 1950's with an apostrophe but that is going out of style and the figures with an appended 's' e.g. the 80s or 1980s is more common. A preceding apostrophe to signal the omitted first two figures e.g. '80s is also possible. It's really just a stylistic choice. If writing academically or for publication, adhere to the appropriate style guide. The safest choice, if writing for a general readership, which is never wrong, is to avoid apostrophes altogether. Alternatively, and some would say better, write the word, e.g. 'the eighties'.
