Is there a difference in meaning between the following two sentences?

1) I had them laugh.

2) I had them laughing.

1) sounds like a stage direction, like you forced someone to laugh. it doesn't sound natural


2) you caused them to laugh by your actions/jokes. it is the natural phrasing
