In reported speech, do you ever use the present perfect instead of the past simple to report what someone has said?
Consider the following example:
Brandi: "Mary is a good singer."
If I want to report this, should I say, "Brandi HAS SAID that Mary is a good singer" or "Brandi SAID that Mary is a good singer"?
Thank you.
You could use either one. In ordinary colloquial speech, though, a native speaker would probably just say: "Brandi says Mary is a good singer."
