Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) The war has diverted attention from the country's economic problems.

2) The war has diverted attention away from the country's economic problems.

If both are possible, do they mean the same thing?

If so, which would you use?

Thank you

They mean the same thing; the word 'away' in the second sentence is unnecessary. I might use either, depending on how attentive I was being to style at the time.
